- ―The Gate Guard to Slade
The Gate Guard appeared in the episode "The End - Part 3". He was an unnamed being in charge of controlling access to a chamber containing the essence of Slade.
Description
The guard resides in an underworld realm. He was seen fighting the undead Slade with his axe while guarding a large door. He resembles a typical medieval executioner, albeit in the much more demonic sense at this juncture. He wears a plain metal helmet without any sort of visor or opening for vision; despite this, he is able to see his environment. Underneath the helmet, however, he does appear to have a humanoid face and at least one eye, as damage to the helmet would reveal. His wicked axe is able to generate fire along the blade, and possesses a separate blade at the other end of the handle. The guard himself seems to be able to withstand physical damage and extreme heat, and may possibly be in an undead or immortal state. He bears the Mark of Skath on his chest, which is also present on the door he was guarding, possibly indicating some sort of subservience or relation to Trigon or his followers. While he was able to overpower Slade in single combat, a well-placed bomb that breached the chamber's door seemed to do away with the Guard instantly, leaving nothing but his helmet and axe; the breaching of the door also restored Slade to full biological life.
After defeating the guard, Slade took the axe to aid the Teen Titans in their fight against Trigon. Despite its size and presumed mass, Slade was able to hurl the weapon through the air to a great height and wounded the demon in the face, suggesting that the weapon has supernatural properties of its own independent of the guard.
Trivia
- There is evidence that the guard is undead due to the fact that when Slade was fully restored to his human form when the door opened, the guard, who had previously survived contact with lava, simply vanished. Thus, it is likely that what destroyed or dispelled the guard was the opening of the gate that had contained Slade's essence, rather than physical damage.
- He is the only villain to have never encountered the Teen Titans.
- He bears a slight resemblance to the antagonist known as Pyramid Head from the Silent Hill series; Pyramid Head is also a muscular, shirtless humanoid creature whose head is similarly encased and who is also armed with a unique oversized weapon.
